Doctoral fellowship in India for ASEAN

The internationally renowned Institutions in technical education, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are inviting scholars from ASEAN countries to apply for PhD fellowships to strengthen the deep and historical relations between India and ASEAN.

The institution thrives for its quality education and strict selection criteria. When selected, you will be able to complete your Ph.D. with funding from the Government of India. The funding includes a monthly stipend and an annual research grant for up to 5 years of their Ph.D. program.

Programme Origin

On 25th January 2018, at the 25th anniversary of the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit in New Delhi, the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, in the presence of the leaders of all 10 ASEAN countries announced the Doctoral fellowship in India for ASEAN. Under this Programme, 1000 fellowships will be provided to ASEAN citizens to pursue an integrated Ph.D. at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology of their choice.

  • Each IIT you apply to follows their admission process consisting of an application screening, shortlisting, and possible online interview
  • The final consolidated results based on the preferences in your application are reported on this portal

Criteria for Selection

  • Default Doctoral fellowship in India for ASEAN Academic score Requirement = 6/10 or 60% (calculated proportionally for other scales)
  • Default Doctoral fellowship in India for ASEAN English Test Requirement: No English Language Certification Requirement
  • Minimum No. of Recommendation letters: 2 recommendation letters

Fellowship Details

5 Years

The maximum term for each fellowship is of 5 years

INR 31,000/-

You will receive a monthly stipend - INR 31,000/- for the first two years, INR 35,000/- for the next three years

INR 170,000/-

Study grant up to INR 170,000/- is provided for research expenses such as travel, books, contingency expenses

Frequently Asked Questions

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are considered among the best engineering/technology institutions in the world. They are also among India's most well known brands. In a fresh beginning, the Government of India - through this programme, offers fellowships funded by Government of India exclusively for ASEAN aspirants to pursue PhD at an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) of their choice. This an exclusive programme and different from all other Government of India programmes such as Study in India and all other fellowships. Accordingly, it doesn't share any common application procedure with them.

The programme offers fellowships only at IITs, and is not meant for any other Indian educational institution.

Apply online (on this portal) to all programmes you wish to apply for, and every selected candidate is awarded the fellowship for pursuing PhD.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. See the Important Dates section on the homepage for the deadline of the current round.

The fellowship include a monthly stipend INR 31,000/- for the first 2 years, INR 35,000/- for the remaining duration, and an annual research grant of Up to INR 170,000/- to be used only for research expenses. The maximum duration of the fellowship is up to 5 years.

The fellowship is at par with that for Indian research scholars and covers the entire cost of study and living expenses for up to 5 years of the PhD programme. It provides an additional contingency fund to cover research expenses such as travel and books. The fellowship include a monthly stipend INR 31,000/- for the first 2 years, INR 35,000/- for the remaining duration and an annual research grant of Up to INR 170,000/- to be used only for research expenses. The tuition and hostel fee is not waived off and the candidate themselves need to pay it. The fees (tuition and hostel) varies from IIT to IIT, indicative tuition and hostel fees of respective IITs can be found by going to explore IIT and clicking on the IIT logo. Further details will be mentioned in the offer letter that the respective IIT sends to the selected candidate.

Hostel fees and Facilities vary from IIT to IIT, details will be provided in the offer letter.

The fellowship provides a stipend to the students INR 31,000/- for the first 2 years, INR 35,000/- for the remaining duration. They can use this money to pay for all their expense including Tuition fees and Hostel fees. Indicative tuition and hostel fees of respective IITs can be found by going to explore IIT and clicking on the IIT logo. Further details will be mentioned in the offer letter that the respective IIT sends to the selected candidate.

Selected candidates are eligible to apply for a student VISA.

Please get in touch with the Indian embassy in your country to find out the fees for VISA, it may vary from country to country.

First incoming visit to India can be reimbursed under your Annual Research Grant amount.

Fellowship amount will be credited every month in the account* of the selected candidate after his/her in-person joining at the campus. The academic registration and other relevant procedures need to be completed before that. * Bank Account has to be opened only in the recommended Indian Bank of your respective IIT.

Respective IITs will take a call on their processes about the online registrations and classes. The details are being worked out by respective IITs, so please be in touch with your IIT.
