Student Visa

All foreign students applying for PhD in any of the IITs need to have a valid passport accepted by the Indian Mission. ASEAN students applying for the fellowships will require a student visa.

Eligibility

A student visa is granted by the Indian Missions/Posts for a period of 5 years or duration of the course, whichever is less.

  • To international students coming to India to pursue regular and full-time academic studies in India.
  • For international students coming for Industrial training, summer projects and internships.
  • Provisional student visa valid for six months for the students exploring admission or taking admission tests.
  • Applicants should possess the proof of admission to a full time regular academic course in one of the IITs in India and evidence of financial support.
  • The applicant should also possess a “No Objection Certificate” from the Ministry of Health in case of admission in medical or Paramedical course.
  • Spouse and dependent family members accompanying the applicant must apply for an Entry Visa (Not Tourist Visa. Its termination date will coincide with the period of the principal visa holder.

Visa Procedure

  • Visa Application are to be filled online at www.indianvisaonline.gov.in
  • After filling of applicant’s details/other details by the applicant, print out of the application has to be taken and submitted personally at the Indian Mission counter along with supporting documents viz. Original Admission Letter from IIT, Last Education Certificate etc.
  • Applicants may be asked to provide additional documents, if needed, by the consular officer.
  • Passport: It should have a minimum validity of six months.
  • Photographs: 2 latest colour, matte (not glossy), passport size photographs depicting front pose against a white background are required. One of them should be pasted in the specified place and the other may be stapled with the application form. Please upload the photograph online.
  • Signatures: Applicants should sign in the box for signatures below the photograph box. One of the parents can sign if the applicant is minor and cannot sign.
  • Biometrics of the applicant will be taken while submitting the application.

Visa Extension Process

The below-mentioned documents are required in 2 sets. (Additional supporting documents may be asked for the verification by the FRRO/FRO.)

  • Original valid Passport and Visa.
  • Bonafide certificate from School, College or institute for the academic year mentioning nationality.
  • Four passport size photographs (4 cm x 4 cm colour photo with white background, ears distinctly visible, without spectacles and caps).
  • Bank remittance i.e. bank statement showing that the applicant can support himself/herself financially during his/her stay of one year in India.
  • Marks sheet or Examination passing certificate for the exams passed in the last academic year.
  • Copies of Passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), page bearing arrival stamp of Indian immigration.
  • Copy of Indian visa.
  • Attendance proof or certificate for regularly attending classes in case of an application for extension Course fees receipt.
  • Admission/eligibility certificate from the University/college/educational institution.
  • In case of change of University/college/educational institution, NoC from the previous University/ college/ educational institution.
  • Proof of Residence of the applicant i.e. copies of Electricity bill/ Telephone Bill/Leave & licence agreement/company accommodation proof.
